The New Forest area covers a vast habitat for wildlife. Forests, heathland, farms and villages, bounded by the Dorset Heaths and Dorset Downs to the west, and the West Wiltshire Downs and Salisbury to the north. The coastal regions and wildlife habitats of the Solent are to the south, with Southampton Water to the east.
Our area is rich in wildlife due to the wonderful mosaic of wet and dry heaths, mires and bogs, ancient woodland, coniferous plantations, grasslands, mixed farmland and coastline. We are told that this combination of natural environments is hard to find anywhere else in western Europe.
If you wish to walk or cycle from Forester’s Cottage into Moors Valley Country Park, the route follows ancient bridleways and signposted footpaths. Through heathland and SSSI protected land (Site of Special Scientific Interest) the tracks are mostly sand and gravel. Reaching the lakes, the terrain changes to paths and fine gravel tracks into the forest to the visitor centre and activities.
